This proposal requests NSF support to broaden participation in the International Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing. This workshop covers all aspects of languages, compiler techniques, run-time environments, and architectures for parallel and high-performance computing. The organizers asked for financial support in the amount of $2,500 to offset the registration fees for US-based students.

Project Report

For the 24-th consecutive year we organized the International Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing (LCPC). While the workshop covers many topics, the emphasis has always been software, e.g., compilers, languages, run-time systems, performance evaluation for parallel systems. With the recent emergence of massively parallel computing platforms, most of the computational systems will need to migrate to parallel machines. This makes the 23 years of effort from the LCPC community increasingly relevant. In the emerging multi- and many-core era, there is a higher need for dynamic runtimes, with dynamic resource availability at multiple levels in the computer architecture parallel and cache hierarchy. Furthermore, the applications are also susceptible to change dynamically. Modern compilation and run-time systems need to address this reality, and LCPC provides a forum for papers on these topics. This grant helped offset the cost of registration. At LCPC, typically almost half of the participants are students and most of the paper presentations at the workshop are given by students or by junior faculty and/or researchers. The workshop is interactive and educational by design. For example, more time than usual is built in for questions and comments at the end of talks. Additionally, the final version of the paper for publication is due at some point after the workshop to enable the incorporation of suggestions made at the workshop. The papers to be presented and then published by the workshop were selected by the program committee through an online review process followed by a day long program committee meeting. The conference program and other information can be found at the conference website (http://lcpc11.cs.colostate.edu/).
